If you have been following me for a while you know that I love matcha. I gave up coffee about 5 years ago and quickly realized that my mornings didn’t feel quite right without having something warm to drink. When I finally tried matcha, I was hooked and it quickly filled that void.

What is matcha?
Matcha is made from ground green tea leaves. Farmers grow matcha by covering their green tea plants 20–30 days before harvest to avoid direct sunlight. This increases chlorophyll production, boosts the amino acid content, and gives the plant a darker green hue.
Once the tea leaves are harvested, the stems and veins are removed and the leaves are ground up into a fine powder known as matcha.
What does matcha taste like?
Some say it tastes like grass, I say it’s delicious! It does have an earthy, bitter flavor but when mixed with a frothed plant milk, it is taken to a whole another level and is delicious.
What to look for when buying matcha?
The food we buy isn’t required to be tested for heavy metals and other contaminants so it’s so important to do our homework to ensure that we are purchasing from companies to ensure pure products.
What to look for in a good matcha company:
- Ceremonial grade which means it comes from the youngest tea leaves resulting in a smoother, less bitter matcha
- Organic
- Tested for heavy metals, mold, pesticides, and radiation by an independent lab
Is matcha good for you?
Not only is matcha delicious but it also has so many benefits including:
- Strengthens the immune system
- High in antioxidants
- Prevents cancer
- Boosts energy without that jittery feeling
- Good for the liver
- Supports weight loss
- And so much more!
What I use to make matcha…
Encha Matcha is the brand I love and recommend. I love using a frother to mix the matcha with good quality oat milk to give it a thick, creamy, frothy consistency! Rise Oat Milk is my oat milk of choice that doesn’t contain all of the bad additives.

How to Make a Matcha Latte
- Add 1/4 cup water and 1 tsp. matcha powder to a mug.
- Use frother to blend together.
- Add warmed oat milk or other plant milk of choice to mug will still running frother.
- Enjoy.
