Takhlakh Campground, located in the Mount Adams Wilderness, is an amazing place to visit in late summer for berry picking! There are wild blueberries and huckleberries everywhere. It’s berry picking heaven!
There are designated places to pick such as the Sawtooth berry fields in which you must have a permit to pick. You can obtain a permit here. Although, we have found that there are almost as many berries to pick at our favorite campground, the Takhlakh Campground.
Takhlakh Campground sits at an elevation of 4,400 feet in a well-shaded location next to Takhlakh Lake. The campground sits at the base of Mt. Adams, providing visitors with incredible views and so much to do. While the campground is a popular destination for hikers exploring the trails around Mount Adams, it is also perfect for water activities including fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming due to the campground’s proximity to the lake. There is also a 1-mile hike around the lake that is easily doable for kids and is perfect for berry picking.
Once there, there are so many different hikes, rivers, and areas to explore in the area.
Takhlakh campground has first-come, first-served and reservable sites. While the sites tend to book up fast on the weekends, there are usually first-come, first-served sites available if you go mid-week. Keep in mind that this is a very remote campground with no running water and no cell service for about an hour.
Camping Food
Figuring out food to bring camping is always a challenge. I am always trying to find ways to keep it healthy and relatively easy. Because of a burn ban that was in effect, we brought along a portable BBQ & a camp stove.
This time our menu consisted of:

- Steak, potatoes, and asparagus
- Salmon and pasta salad (find recipe here)
- Grass-fed hot dogs
- Migas with leftover potatoes
- Simple mills pancake & waffle mix
- Lots of prepped and washed veggies and fruits
- Lots of healthier snacks
- S’mores, but cleaner s’mores

…and clean wine of course! Learn more about the only wine I drink here!
